COP30 Plenary Statement, Belem, Brazil

CHRIS BOWEN: Mr President, Excellencies, Australia is honoured to be entrusted with the stewardship of the Global Climate Negotiations process next year as President of Negotiations. I congratulate and thank Turkiye, in particular my friend, Minister Murat Kurum, and all of his team for taking on the role of COP31 President and hosting the World Leaders Summit and COP31 in Turkiye next year. I thank [indistinct] for their support and their endorsement of this arrangement, and I thank all those around the world who have supported Australia every step of the way. We wouldn't be here without you. I would particularly like to thank all my Pacific friends and colleagues, both for the extraordinary leadership they lead in this part of the process each and every year, but also for the critical role they too will play in the delivery of COP31. I'd like to take this opportunity to invite leaders and others to travel to the Pacific for pre-COP. Together, we look forward to showcasing Pacific issues for the world to see. I thank my Pacific family.

This innovative solution to the delivery of COP next year has been built on trust and partnership. Trust and partnership for the Pacific and for Turkiye that will continue to grow and deepen as we work together next year. This is a win for multilateralism, it is a demonstration of global will and a willingness to cooperate and provide practical solutions to problems. Together, Australia, Turkiye and the Pacific will strive to ensure COP31 is a success. We will maintain a focus on doing all we can to keep 1.5 degrees alive, as this is such an imperative for our planet and our Pacific friends. We'll seek to share innovative and effective climate solutions that help all of us accelerate our energy transition. In the year ahead in my role, I'll carry forward much of the struggle that Brazil has led as Compendium President, and I thank you, President do Lago, and Brazil for getting us here.

Finally, Your Excellencies, I'd like to thank Brazil, Azerbaijan, Turkiye and the UNFCCC [indistinct] for engaging so constructively in supporting a positive resolution on the hosting arrangements of COP31. Australia is grateful to you. I also want to thank the people of Belem for so warmly embracing us in their beautiful city and thank the whole team that worked hard as they could to make COP30 a success. I undertake to work closely with you to carry forward and build upon your legacy in the negotiations as we progress towards COP31.

Thank you.
