Strengthening environment and climate ties with the Pacific

Assistant Minister for Climate Change and Energy Jenny McAllister will travel to Apia, Samoa, to attend the 31st Environment Ministers’ High Level Talanoa (meeting) on 8 September.

The meeting of regional environment ministers, hosted by the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), will focus on the challenges of climate change, plastic pollution and biodiversity loss across the Pacific and the ongoing collaborative efforts to ensure the region’s future health and sustainability.

This is the first in-person Pacific environment ministerial meeting since 2019. The meeting is an opportunity to reaffirm Australia’s commitment to partnering with Pacific countries to elevate global ambition for a sustainable and resilient Blue Pacific.

Assistant Minister McAllister will discuss Australia’s bid to co-host COP31 in partnership with the Pacific at a panel on climate change and biodiversity conservation.

Attendees include representatives from SPREP’s Members, including 21 Pacific Countries and Territories and 5 metropolitan members (Australia, France, New Zealand, the UK and the US).
