The Hon Rebecca White MP, Assistant Minister for Health and Aged Care, Assistant Minister for Women, Assistant Minister for Indigenous Health, Member for Lyons
The Albanese Government is investing $800,000 to protect two historically significant Tasmanian places which form part of the Australian Convict Sites World Heritage Property.
The commitment, made by the Albanese Labor Government in the 2025 election campaign, will maintain, restore and preserve buildings to safeguard the outstanding heritage values associated with Woolmers Estate and Brickendon Estate.
The investment includes:
- $400,000 for Woolmers Foundation to assist in meeting the costs associated with managing the site, including by reducing critical maintenance issues and enhancing the visitor experience.
- $400,000 for Brickendon Trust to undertake a range of maintenance and upgrade works, which will ensure Brickendon Estate complies with legislative and operational requirements.
The projects are being funded by the Government’s Local Environmental Projects Program.
Minister for the Environment and Water, Murray Watt said the program will deliver important works at both sites.
“The Albanese Government’s Local Environmental Projects Program is ensuring that sites like these can keep their doors open and be able to undertake critical maintenance work, so they can be enjoyed by locals and tourists now and into the future.
Member for Lyons, Rebecca White said the investment would mean Tasmania’s heritage would be preserved.
“These sites are special to Tasmanians, and part of Australia’s history – they deserve to be shared and maintained.
“Through this funding we’re supporting the locals who have the knowledge and the skills to connect and care for nature and improve our heritage sites, so that our history is preserved for future generations.
“The Albanese Government is delivering on its election commitments, and delivering for Tasmanians.”
